Futsal was no surprise to St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Toronto; where Futsal Club Toronto staff were in attendance to deliver a lecture of their own in FUTSAL.
Over 60 students gathered in the school gymnasium for a presentation on futsal at the request of school Principal Laurienne Graham. Mrs. Graham had brought to our attention that her students were true soccer fanatics something that they could all identify themselves with and considering we as Canadians endure over 7 months of winter Principal Graham looked at an alternative sport to keep her athletes active, fit and involved over the winter season.
Students were eager to learn about the sport and all about the experiences of Canadian Men’s National Futsal Team players Roy Blanche and Alvaro Yaques as some students were preparing for an after school open try-outs for their indoor soccer team. They were immensely engaged with the presentation and educational part that they both had to offer in the sport of futsal, along with the opportunities that futsal had to offer to the Toronto Students and Athletes.
This was the first opportunity they had to actually scrimmage and play with an official futsal ball and they were elated when they found out the club willingly donated a futsal ball for use on their first day of tryouts. Both coaches were impressed with the basic knowledge most players already shared on futsal and they definitely were not shy when it came to participating.
The Toronto Catholic District School Board is always looking at new ways to incorporate new sports and activities to its curriculum across the board and we may just be able to introduce futsal to 201 schools in the Toronto area; a reality Technical Director Roy Blanche could only hope for, “the most important factor here today is that kids LOVE futsal and enjoyed themselves. By incorporating the sport of futsal into the physical education curriculum will allow children to learn a new sport and play the game; something that will change the landscape of futsal and soccer in this country. The worlds top soccer nations already are ahead of the game by incorporating futsal at the elementary, high school and College/University level. I think today was a big step forward for the sport of futsal in Toronto.
Thank you to Principal Graham and the staff at St. John the Evangelist School for inviting Futsal Club Toronto into their school and we look forward to more projects and opportunities in the future.
